Internships
These Internships are focused towards providing women-in-STEM increased experience while also preparing for real world situations, and gaining valuable connections and knowledge.
MAGIC
More Active Girls in Computing, better known as MAGIC, is an organization which was formed to increase women’s interest in STEM fields using computing resources. MAGIC has Fall, Spring, and Summer Mentorships to help Girls create their own passion project in relation of STEM. In this program, students are partnered with a Mentor currently involved in a STEM field, and they provide direction and ideas towards the participants’ projects. MAGIC is a very good program to genuinely build and expand your interest in STEM.
Boston University - RISE
Boston University’s RISE program is an extremely prestigious 6-week residential/commuter internship program. In this program, participants will spend 40 hours a week to craft their own research project. This project can be based in a variety of STEM fields, and projects are presented at the poster symposium at the end of the program. RISE does have a tuition charge, but RISE has both financial aid options, as well as scholarships to this program!
NASA Internships
NASA has a plethora of internship opportunities at their various facilities. Although there aren’t a huge amount of high school internships offered, there are opportunities available for mainly upperclassmen (11-12th grade), like the OSTEM internship. Furthermore, NASA has mainly engineering internships, but also has other STEM related internships as they need a variety of different interests and jobs for each facility. NASA also offers spring, summer, and fall internships! Make sure to keep checking their internship site to see if any opportunities come up!
BRAINYAC
BRAINYAC is a summer internship at Columbia University for 10th and 11th graders currently residing in NYC and who have previously attended a partner program, for example S-PREP, which was mentioned in the Summer Opportunity portion of FutureSTEMinists. BRAINYAC is a highly hands-on summer research experience in Columbia labs, in which participants are paired with a Columbia neuroscientist. Throughout this program, participants will create and execute their own research project, culminating with a presentation. Applications open in October, so keep a look out!
YES in the Heights
YES in the Heights is a very competitive 8- week summer internship spanning 2 summers. High school and undergraduate students 14 years and up are free to apply to this internship focused on providing hands on experience with cancer research, while also guiding interns through their biomedical journey. This internship, based at Columbia university, recommends local applicants because they don’t provide housing, and they also prioritize applicants who participated in some Columbia programs like S-PREP. At the end of intern’s second summer at YES in the Heights, they present a scientific oral presentation. This application also opens in the fall, so keep an eye out for the application.
Bank of America Student Leaders
Bank Of America Student Leaders is an extremely competitive summer internship for juniors and seniors. About 300 students from a variety of communities and backgrounds connect to this program across the United States. Interns participate in a 8-week paid internship at a nonprofit, and culminate this experience with the National Student Leaders Summit in Washington D.C., in which all participants meet up. Even though this program is not explicitly STEM based, the community and leadership skills gained from this experience can easily be applicable to the STEM field of your interest. Applications open in the fall.
Stanford AIMI Research Internship
Stanford’s Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Imagine internship, better known as AIMI, is a 2 week virtual summer research internship geared towards high schoolers’ interested to see AI’s impact in healthcare. During this program, students are lectured about AI basics and its impact in healthcare, participate in mentoring activities with Stanford researchers, research sessions, and social activities. Furthermore, for interested participants, there is an extended research internship that may be provided after completion of this program. This program is not free, however there is financial aid and application fee waivers to reduce costs. Applications are due late February.
SEAP
The Science Engineering Apprenticeship program, better known as SEAP, is a naval research and technology internship. This 8-week long summer internship for high schoolers 16 and up contains real, hands-on naval research conducted by interns in the Department of Navy’s laboratories. Furthermore, this program often leads to future careers in the Department of Navy, as well as mentoring from highly educated and skilled individuals in science and engineering fields. This program is free, and also also provides a hefty stipend for the work completed. Applications open in the fall!
